Mobile Gaming Surge in the UK

Many of us play games on our mobile. Whether it’s to kill time on the commute to work or simply for leisure, games on our smartphones offer us an immediate release. How many of us have noticed how addicted we really are though?

Latest figures from comScore show 20 million of UK consumers play games on their mobile. This is double the number of gamers calculated at the start of 2011. What’s more, 6.2 million of us are ‘avid’ gamers, using our smartphone or tablet each day to get our gaming fix.

The explosion of mobile gamers is down to the growth of the ‘freemium’ model being adopted by companies such as Supercell’s Clash of Clans. Such games are offering consumers free experiences, but with the opportunity to pay extra for quicker upgrades/game play. Essentially, customers are paying more money so they can interact with a game less.

Demographics wise, there’s a relatively even split between men and women, with 48% of mobile gamers known to be female. Mobile games are also often played at home, with 64% of consumers playing in their living room or bedroom.

With smartphone uptake continuing to increase in the UK, it is clear mobile gaming has no plans to slow down anytime soon.
